Tasha Robinson— Chicago, IL

I always forget how much I love Beagle's prose, how beautiful and sweet I think his bizarre poetic metaphors are, and how much he just surprises me with his work. I wasn't honestly expecting much from the audiobook — I went though an audiobook phase back when I was spending two hours a day commuting, but I've never much liked them, compared to reading at my own pace. But listening to him reading his own funny, tender words in his own funny, rough voice… I spent half of yesterday all choked up, and laughing at myself for it. I've been enjoying this so much. There's so much about the book that I'd completely forgotten, and "reading" it again is terrific. And it lends itself so well to the bedtime-story quality of an audiobook.

[I'm] absolutely thrilled beyond words. Peter has a wonderful voice. Really brought the story to life, and Jeff Slingluff's music is beautiful and stunning. This was a wonderful idea. I loved the fact that this story in on audiobook. I grew up watching the movie and then discovered the book and Beagle's other fantastic works. The story still holds wonder to me. Thank you.

Peter S. Beagle's reading? All I can say is YAY. And Jeff Slingluff's music was beautiful. Simply wonderful.

Totally serious question: Have you ever considered getting PSB to pursue commercial voiceover work? I'd seen him read before, but damn, he's on fire here! I was really struck by the way he managed to disappear into each character. Couldn't help thinking of vocal talents like Hank Azaria or Harry Shearer on The Simpsons , who are capable of inhabiting dozens of separate characters without ever sounding alike. (Come to think of it, there was this one Simpsons episode in which Mr. Burns received a unicorn for his birthday...)

This may actually be the first audiobook I listen to all the way through. It's staying on the iPod for a good long time, ensconced between Pete Townshend and The Pixies (august company, to be sure).

Tiffany Wright — Jackson, GA

It's the greatest ever. Mr. Beagle sings the songs, and has such a charming way of reading his own work! :o)

I have not read the novel, but I saw the animated film many years ago. I enjoyed the book's differences from the movie. It was also a good length for an audiobook — I have listened to some much longer, and it can be hard to sustain attention the whole way through when there are many more hours than 6 or 7. [On Peter Beagle's reading...] Although he had some unusual speech mannerisms (not sure whether to call it an accent?) compared to, say, a professional reader. I thought this was a small tradeoff for the authenticity added by its being read by the author! The reading itself (pacing, enunciation, etc.) was very good. I enjoyed it overall. [On Jeff Slingluff's music...] The style of the music was suited to the book, although the different chapters' intros were often very different from each other, so I think they could have had more integration via a common theme. I was listening for differences in the music based on the plot tension level in the chapters they preceded, but never found any definite connection. The music interludes also sometimes seemed a little long. But on the whole I thought the music was pleasant and original, and enhanced the experience of listening to the audiobook.

It's interesting to hear Peter Beagle speak the words he wrote. [As for the music...] If anything, there isn't enough of it! I would like to hear it throughout the reading...

Kristina Parmenter — Vancouver, WA

I have always loved the book, and I was worried that the audiobook might not work for me because I was used to reading it, not hearing it. But I really enjoyed listening to the audiobook, and especially enjoyed the music.
